Art has always challenged conventions, questioned boundaries, and explored the complexities of the human experience. Yet few forms of artistic expression have faced as much misunderstanding, controversy, and dismissal as erotic art. Too often reduced to something merely provocative or obscene, erotic art has struggled for the same recognition afforded to other creative disciplines. For 27 years, the Dirty Show® has been challenging that perception, proving that erotic art deserves to be seen, appreciated, and celebrated.
What began in 2000 as a small, renegade exhibition above an auto bump- shop in Royal Oak, Michigan, has evolved into North America's largest and longest-running exhibition of erotic art. From its unconventional beginnings, the Dirty Show has embraced a simple but powerful idea: sexuality is an essential part of the human experience, and its exploration through art is every bit as legitimate as the depiction of love, beauty, conflict, or the human condition itself.
Celebrating its 27th year in 2027, the Dirty Show returns to Detroit with an extraordinary exhibition featuring more than 350 works by over 200 artists from around the world. Spanning painting, photography, sculpture, digital art, mixed media, and beyond, the exhibition demonstrates the remarkable diversity, creativity, and artistic merit of erotic expression. Some works are beautiful and intimate, others confrontational or humorous. Some challenge social norms, while others simply celebrate the human form, desire, and connection. Together, they reveal that erotic art is not a single style or statement, but a rich and varied form of creative expression.
Erotic art is not a modern invention, nor is it a lesser form of artistic expression. From ancient civilizations to the Renaissance and contemporary galleries, sexuality and the human body have inspired artists throughout history. The distinction between what society considers fine art and what it dismisses as inappropriate has often reflected ever-changing cultural attitudes rather than artistic merit. The Dirty Show invites audiences to look beyond those labels, to consider the intention, imagination, craftsmanship, and emotion behind the work, broadening their interpretation of "art."
That said, the Dirty Show has never been interested in becoming a conventional gallery experience. It's an immersive celebration of art, individuality, and unapologetic self-expression. World-class burlesque, boylesque, drag, fetish, and variety performances bring the stage to life, while unexpected spectacles and immersive installations create an atmosphere unlike any traditional exhibition. The Dirty Show attracts thousands of visitors to Detroit each year, bringing together artists, collectors, enthusiasts, and curious newcomers in an environment that encourages exploration without judgment.
At its heart, the Dirty Show is about more than sexuality. It's about artistic freedom, challenging preconceived notions, and creating space for expression that might otherwise be overlooked, misunderstood, or excluded. Not every work is intended to be comfortable. Not every piece is meant to be beautiful. Some are designed to provoke thought, spark conversation, inspire laughter, or challenge the viewer. Part gallery, part cabaret, part carnival of the unexpected, the Dirty Show offers an immersive experience where there's always something to see, someone to meet, and another surprise waiting around the corner.
The stage is alive, and the entertainment is anything but ordinary. Each year, the Dirty Show brings together an extraordinary lineup of burlesque, boylesque, drag, and variety performers from Detroit and beyond. From glamorous striptease and outrageous comedy to jaw-dropping performances that defy expectations, the stage delivers a dazzling mix of talent, theatrics, and just the right amount of mischief. Whether you're a seasoned burlesque enthusiast or experiencing it for the first time, expect to be thoroughly entertained.
See something on the exhibition walls you love, but there’s a ‘Sold’ dot? Take a little Dirty print home with you. The Dirty Print Store offers thousands of affordable prints and other creations from both current and past Dirty Show artists. It's an opportunity to discover new favorites, support independent artists, and own a piece of the exhibition's creative legacy. With an ever-changing selection of provocative, playful, and extraordinary artwork, there's something for nearly every taste and budget.
Expect the unexpected. It's kind of our thing. Beyond the gallery and main stage, the Dirty Show is filled with entertainment and experiences that make every visit a little different. The popular Cinerotic Film Festival returns with an eclectic collection of provocative, imaginative, and boundary-pushing short films. Elsewhere, go-go dancers, the ever-popular spanking booth, and an assortment of unconventional attractions add to the atmosphere. And because we love a good surprise, there are always a few things we prefer not to reveal in advance.
All that art appreciation can work up a thirst. Multiple fully stocked bars throughout the venue serve a variety of cocktails, craft spirits, and familiar favorites to keep the evening flowing. Feeling hungry? An on-site food vendor offers something to satisfy those late-night cravings. Grab a drink, take a break, and then dive back into the festivities.
Sometimes the most interesting works of art aren't hanging on the walls. The Dirty Show attracts one of Detroit's most eclectic, expressive, and fascinating crowds. From elaborate costumes and extravagant fashion, to leather, latex, lace, or your favorite pair of jeans, individuality is always in style. Dress to impress, dress to express, or simply come as you are. There's no required look, no expectation to participate, and no single way to experience the Dirty Show. Just bring an open mind and a sense of adventure.
Doors open at 7:00 PM nightly, giving you plenty of time to explore the exhibition and enjoy the evening's entertainment. Arriving early means better access to nearby parking and a chance to experience the gallery before the crowds build.
On-site parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached, and coat check service is available for your convenience.
